School Playground Design

Great school playground design turns an ordinary outdoor space into somewhere pupils want to move, play, learn and socialise. Whether you have a blank tarmac area, an awkward slope, or a tired space that needs a fresh purpose, the right design makes the most of what you have and builds in years of use. This guide walks through how we approach school playground design, the playground equipment options for different age groups and needs, and how to plan a scheme that fits your space and your budget.

Every school is different, so we start with your site, your pupils and your goals rather than an off the shelf layout. Our in house design team will work with you to shape a space that reflects how your school actually uses the outdoors.

Accessible and SEN playground design

An inclusive playground lets every child play alongside their friends, whatever their needs. Accessible school playground design means thinking about wheelchair access, sensory experiences, quiet spaces and equipment that children of different abilities can enjoy together. For special schools and SEN settings, we design around specific requirements, from wheelchair accessible roundabouts and swings to sensory gardens, calming areas and ground level play that removes barriers.

We have delivered fully inclusive schemes for special schools, including large SEN adventure areas that combine climbing, sensory and social play in one accessible space. If accessibility is a priority for your project, see our SEN playground equipment options for more detail.

Early years, EYFS and nursery playground design

Younger children need a different kind of space. EYFS and nursery playground design focuses on safe, stimulating areas that support early development through messy play, role play, mark making, water and sand, and gentle physical challenge. Soft, safe surfacing, low level equipment and imaginative features help early years pupils explore and build confidence outdoors.

We design early years spaces that link directly to the EYFS framework, so the area supports learning as well as play. You can see more of our approach for this age group on our EYFS playground page.

Designing a playground to fit your budget

A great playground does not have to mean a single huge outlay. Good school playground design works with the budget you have, whether that means one standout feature now or a phased plan that grows over a few years. Clever use of space, surfacing and multi use equipment can deliver real impact without stretching your funds.

Our bespoke design process

We offer a bespoke service that gives you the chance to design something unique with us, just for your school. Have an awkward hill or mound in the way of your perfect space? We can turn it into a feature rather than an obstacle. Want to utilise awkward spaces with embankment play, a themed adventure trail, or a personal message worked into your equipment? Tell us your ideas and our design team will bring them to life.

The process is simple. We visit or discuss your site, listen to what you want to achieve, and produce a design and visual so you can picture the finished space before committing. From there we refine the plan with you, agree the specification, and our own installation team builds it to a high standard with long guarantees on our equipment

Real project example

Tor Bridge High was left with a bare outdoor area after being built in 2012, and the school wanted something different and exciting. We built two mounds from which a bespoke double tower with a connecting bridge and viewing platforms could stand, overlooking the rest of the playground and their new multi use games area below. It is a good example of turning an empty, awkward space into a striking, well used focal point through bespoke design.
