Brunswick House Primary School

Primary School Safety Surface EYFS

Brunswick House Primary School approached Schoolscapes with an ambitious project: a complete revamp of their entire early years outdoor area. The existing space had become tired and unfit for purpose, with worn surfacing that no longer met safety standards and rotten equipment that needed replacing. The school wanted to create a vibrant, stimulating environment where their youngest pupils could learn, play, and develop through outdoor activity, all while improving site security.

The project scope was significant. The school needed a full replacement of their old surfacing, removal of all damaged equipment, a new covered learning area for all-weather outdoor teaching, improved fencing to enhance safeguarding, and a design that would engage and inspire early years children through creative, colourful play zones.

What We Installed

Wet Pour Rubber Surfacing

The entire early years area was resurfaced with wet pour rubber, providing a seamless, impact-absorbing surface that is both safe and visually striking. Wet pour is mixed and laid on site, creating a continuous finish with no joins or trip hazards, making it ideal for the high-traffic, active nature of an early years playground.

The surfacing was designed in a bold blue colourway, giving the space a bright, inviting feel. A roadway feature was integrated directly into the wet pour, complete with markings, giving children an imaginative play zone where they can ride trikes and balance bikes, developing their physical coordination and understanding of the world around them.

Synthetic Grass Areas

Alongside the wet pour, designated zones of synthetic grass were incorporated into the design. These areas provide a natural-looking, low-maintenance surface that is perfect for sitting, rolling, and free play. The contrast between the blue wet pour and the green grass areas creates clearly defined activity zones, helping children navigate the space and understand different areas of their playground.

Synthetic grass is a durable, all-weather solution that stays green and usable throughout the year, eliminating the mud and waterlogging problems that natural turf often causes in busy school environments.

Covered Learning Area

A key element of the project was the addition of a new covered learning area, providing a sheltered outdoor space where teaching and learning can continue regardless of the weather. The structure features built-in seating, making it an ideal spot for outdoor classroom sessions, storytime, group activities, and quiet reflection.

For EYFS settings, having access to covered outdoor space is invaluable. It supports the free-flow play approach that underpins early years education, allowing children to move between indoor and outdoor environments throughout the day regardless of weather conditions.

Security Fencing

To address the school’s safeguarding concerns, additional fencing was installed around the perimeter of the early years area. This creates a secure, enclosed environment where young children can play freely while staff maintain clear supervision. The fencing ensures the space is fully safeguarded without feeling closed-off or oppressive.

Delivery & Installation

Due to access restrictions at the school site, the entire project had to be completed within an extremely tight two-week window. Our installation team worked every day, including weekends, to ensure the work was finished on time and to the highest standard. This kind of commitment is something we pride ourselves on at Schoolscapes. We understand that schools operate to strict timetables and that disruption to the learning environment must be kept to an absolute minimum.

Despite the compressed schedule, there were no compromises on quality. Every element, from the wet pour surfacing to the covered learning area and fencing, was installed with precision and care, ready for the children to enjoy from day one.

The Result

The transformation at Brunswick House Primary School has been remarkable. What was once a tired, worn-out outdoor area with safety concerns is now a vibrant, purpose-built early years environment that supports learning, physical development, and imaginative play. The combination of colourful wet pour surfacing, synthetic grass zones, a covered teaching space, and secure fencing means the school now has an outdoor area that truly meets the needs of their EYFS curriculum.
