Active Play for Schools: Getting Every Child Moving

23rd July 2026 Schoolscapes UK Sports, Teaching Resources

Active play is any play that gets children moving: climbing, balancing, swinging, running, jumping and clambering their way through the school day. Active play for schools is one of the simplest and most powerful tools available to support children’s physical health, concentration and social development, and it can be built into playtimes, PE and everyday learning without adding pressure to an already full timetable.

Why active play matters in schools

The case for keeping children active has never been stronger. The World Health Organisation ranks childhood obesity as one of the most serious global public health challenges of the 21st century, and figures from the Children’s Food Trust have found that close to a quarter of children in the UK are already overweight or obese by the time they start school.

It is not only about weight. A University of Essex study reported by the BBC compared the fitness of 10-year-olds over a 16-year period and found children had become significantly weaker, with muscle strength down around 20 percent and muscular endurance down around 30 percent. Interestingly, the researchers found that one in three children of a normal weight were unfit, which shows that a “healthy” weight alone does not guarantee a healthy, active child.

UK Chief Medical Officers recommend that children and young people aged 5 to 18 average at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day. Schools are ideally placed to deliver a meaningful share of that, and a well-designed play space makes it happen almost effortlessly.

The benefits of active play

Physically, active play develops muscle and bone strength and improves coordination, gross motor skills and agility. Just as importantly, it supports learning: even light exercise has been shown to improve memory, mood and concentration, which is why a quick burst of movement before a lesson can help children settle and focus. Active play is also deeply social, giving children natural opportunities to take turns, solve problems, encourage each other and build friendships.

Active play equipment for schools

The right equipment turns a playground into an all-day activity hub. Popular choices include climbing frames and monkey bars that build upper-body and grip strength, adventure and trim trails that combine challenge with imaginative play, outdoor gym equipment suitable for both primary and secondary pupils, and swings. For early years settings, our portable Little Movers range is sized for little legs and can be rearranged daily to keep play fresh. You can explore the full active play range to see what suits your space.

Simple ways to build active play into the school day

You do not need to overhaul the curriculum to get children moving. A daily mile track gives every class a quick, weatherproof way to run or walk a mile a day. Zoning the playground into active, quiet and imaginative areas helps more children find an activity that appeals to them. Outdoor gym and trail equipment gives PE lessons a permanent, ready-to-use resource, and the same kit keeps children active during break times and independent learning.

Making active play inclusive

Every child has the right to join in. Thoughtful design and a range of SEN and inclusive play equipment mean children of all abilities can experience the same adventure and develop the same skills together. Inclusive active play benefits the whole school community, not just those it is designed for.
