Portreath Surf Life Savers Nippers’ Success

Portreath Surf Lifesavers

Portreath Surf Life Saving Club has a well-deserved, enviable reputation for its admirable work in educating young people in valuable, life-saving and beach-safety skills. Its talented coaches support children on their pathway to becoming confident lifesavers, with many of the Nippers going on to become successful youth lifesavers and often even competing for Team GB or becoming Life Guards for the RNLI. Children can join the club and get involved in learning about beach safety through fun activities, by becoming Sand-hoppers from age 6 and going on to enter Surf Life Saving competitions when they are ready from age 8.

At the beginning of March, we were proud to sponsor the Nippers at Portreath Life Saving Club by providing all 130 Nippers and their dedicated coaches with smart team T-shirts to support them during their competitions.

Since then, the enthusiastic Nippers have gone on to prove that they are just as effective in the still waters of the pool as in the open ocean, by competing successfully in the Nipper National Pool Competition in Cardiff. This national competition, set in a stunning 50-metre pool, consisted of a variety of very challenging events such as the Flipper Race, Manikin Carry and Board Rescue and Relays.

Nipper National Pool Competition

We are so pleased that the Portreath Nippers had such a great competition in Wales, demonstrating their exceptional determination, stamina and skill by achieving a ranking in the top ten out of all the teams competing at this high, national level.

Whilst competing in Cardiff, the Portreath Surf Life Saving Club brought home a plethora of Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals. We are proud to be their sponsors. Congratulations Portreath Nippers! What a team!

Here at Schoolscapes, we are especially proud of Imogen Turner, age 9, having her dedication and exceptional attitude towards life-saving rewarded by not only winning the Female Competitor of the Year Trophy but also the Best Newcomer Cup!

A tremendous achievement, but so well-deserved. Well done Imogen! Her proud father Nick Turner, Schoolscapes’ General Manager, recognises the importance of the hard work carried out at Portreath by all the young Surf Life Savers and volunteers and initiated our sponsorship of Imogen and all her brilliant friends.

Female Competitor of the Year

It’s not all hard work though. On 17th June the Portreath Nippers all enjoyed participating in the Max Hocking Nippers Fun Day in Hayle, which acts as a fun warm-up event before the upcoming ocean-based competitive surf life-saving events this Summer. There were smiles all around and the children all benefited from gaining experience at this beach-based event, where the sea conditions are much more variable than in a pool.

As the Summer competitions approach, we wish all the Nippers at Portreath Surf Life Saving Club the best of luck at the Cornish Nipper Championships taking place at Portreath itself, on 21st-22nd July, as well as at the National Surf Life Saving Championships at Holywell Bay from 18th to 25th August.

We know they will put in maximum effort in the races and beach challenges alongside having fun and making many new friends and lasting memories. At Schoolscapes, we are looking forward to hearing and celebrating all the Nippers’ stories and successes from the Summer!
