Hobbs Hill Wood Primary School

Hobbs Hill Wood Primary School

Hobbs Hill Wood is a large primary school in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire catering for 3 – 11 year olds which Schoolscapes have worked on several projects.

There were two different area requiring redevelopment and the works were phased into two separate projects to allow the school to generate funds for the second project.

The first project was for the Key Stage One playground, approximately 120 children use the playground and it offered little stimulation for the children and was pretty bare and uninspiring. The brief from the school staff and school council was for new equipment to provide as much play as possible within the space available, promoting the use of upper body strength, role play, and for children to develop gross motor skills. However the client did not want a single large structure, but also additional equipment to distract from the main structure offers multiple focus for the children.

The second project was to develop the Early Years area, which was quite a large area, however the majority of the available space was grass which prevented play all year round due to the children getting covered in mud. The client wanted to expand the usable space available for play all year round so our focus was to offer all weather surfacing to expand the usable space. Old equipment would have to be removed and an unusable grass mound removed.

Bespoke Playground Design

In the Key Stage One area a bespoke quad tower was designed using the schools vibrant colours of purple and yellow on the exterior surfaces of the tower. The design team also included seating, chalk boards and trail equipment to allow the quad tower to be the sole focus. The area was completed with blue wet pour safety surfacing to finish off the vibrant theme.

With the Early years area old equipment was removed along with the soil mound. In its place a new sand dressed synthetic sports pitch was installed to allow for general sports play and PE lessons. A double tower, in the same colours as the key Stage one quad tower was also installed with resin bound bark safety surfacing allowing all year use.

Some line markings were also installed on the existing tarmac surface to offer alternative play such as a trike track and hopscotch markings.

‘Working with Schoolscapes has been a refreshing experience. Their communication has been excellent from the initial site visit through to the completion of the project and the installation teams demonstrated a real understanding of working in a school environment. We are delighted with our new playground equipment which has been designed to meet our requirements, incorporating the right level of challenge and range of activities for all our Key Stage 1 children’.
